Bill:

SJ 2

Voting

Voting

About the bill:

This bill will change a part of Virginia's set of laws to make sure that everyone in Virginia who can vote is able to.

  • Specifically, this bill is about people voting who:

    • have broken an important law or

    • who have been told an intellectual disability stops them from voting.

      • Intellectual disability: a condition that changes the ways or the amount of time it takes a person to process information. This may make it harder to read, write, do math, or make decisions.

  • If this bill passes, it will:

    • Take words out of the law about people who have broken the law needing to get special permission from the government to vote.

    • Add a new part that people who have broken the law can still vote.

    • Allow an intellectually disabled person to vote if the court finds that the person understands voting.

Position Statement:

New Disabled South supports people having the right to vote. The changes in this bill make sure disabled people and people who have broken the law can still vote in Virginia.
