Bill:
SB 9
About the bill:
This is a bill about selling food and hygiene products, and the ways they are taxed in Virginia.
Sales tax: a smaller, extra amount of money people pay the seller for buying products.
If this bill passes:
Virginia law about taxes on food and hygiene products will be updated.
Some taxes on other kinds of products will not be put on food and hygiene products.
This includes local use tax, which is a smaller, extra amount of money people sometimes have to pay when buying products made outside the area that the products are sold in.
Starting on January 1, 2027:
Food and hygiene products cannot be taxed more like other products are according to some of Virginia’s tax laws.
Money that would have been made on taxing these products will be split between cities and counties across Virginia.
The amount of money that each city and county gets will be based on:
How many products are sold there
How much in sales tax were collected there that month.
Position Statement:
New Disabled South supports food and hygiene items being more affordable. The changes in this bill will help do that by avoiding tax on these items in Virginia.
