Bill:

SB 4

Free School Breakfast

Free School Breakfast

About the bill:

This is a bill to change and take out parts of Virginia law in order to make school breakfast free to all students.

  • If this bill passes:

    • Each school board will make the public schools in their area take part in the National School Lunch Program and School Breakfast Program run by the office in the national government that oversees growing and farming food.

      • School board: a group of leaders in a specific area elected to be in charge of the public schools in that area.

    • Schools will offer lunch and  breakfast through these programs to any student who asks, no matter if the student has money or owes money from other meals.

    • Any student who wants a school breakfast can get it for free, unless their caregiver gives written permission to skip the meal.

    • The state government office that is in charge of education can make rules as needed to start these changes.

    • Part of Virginia law is taken out.

  • Nothing in this bill stops a school board from charging for meals, as long as they do not use a debt collector that’s not part of the government to get paid for meals that student have eaten.

    • To cover this cost, the state government office in charge of education will give money back to each public school for one breakfast for each student each school day.

Position Statement:

New Disabled South supports students being able to get breakfast for free. The changes in this bill will allow more students to have free breakfast.
