Bill:
SB 738
About the bill:
This is a bill about how schools should deal with students using cell phones. It's for all public schools, from kindergarten to high school.
This bill says:
Schools need to make rules about cell phones. These rules should be easy for kids to understand and should be different for younger students and older students.
Schools should try to keep cell phones out of classrooms.
If students are allowed to use phones outside of class, the rules should be clear. The rules should make sure that phones don't cause problems or distractions.
Teachers should be in charge of enforcing the rules. They shouldn't have to ask a police officer to help.
Some students might need to use their phones for certain reasons. For example, a kid with a health problem might need to use their phone to call for help or monitor blood sugar.
Students can't be kicked out of school just for breaking the phone rules. They can only be punished if they are also being disruptive or breaking other school rules.
The bill doesn't say that schools have to ban cell phones completely. Schools can decide how strict they want to be.
