Bill:

SB 145

Early Voting

Early Voting

About the bill:

If this bill passes, it changes voting laws in Texas so that anyone who is allowed to vote can vote early by mail.

  • This bill:

    • Gets rid of the rules about who can apply for a mail-in ballot.

    • Gets rid of certain crimes about getting a mail-in ballot.

      • If passed, people will have more freedom to give out and help others with mail-in ballot applications.

    • Makes the application form simpler by getting rid of checkboxes for things like age or disability.

  • Right now, only certain folks can vote early by mail, like those over 65, disabled people, anyone out of the county on election day, or people in jail who can still vote.

    • But, if this bill passes, anyone who’s allowed to vote can vote early by mail, no matter their age, disability, or where they are.

  • Right now, voters have to give a reason for requesting a mail-in ballot. But if this bill passes, voters will not need to explain why they want a mail-in ballot.

  • Right now, ballots can be thrown out if the voter doesn't have a good enough reason for voting by mail. But if this bill passes, ballots can’t be thrown out anymore for not providing a reason, since everyone will be able to vote by mail.

  • If this bill passes, these changes apply to elections on or after September 1, 2025.
