Bill:
HB 1442
About the bill:
This bill suggests adding a new law called the "Stop American Gestapo Act (SAGA)."
This bill says a "Law enforcement officer” is anyone from a local, state, or national police office, or someone doing what one says to do.
If this bill passes:
It’s against the law for a law enforcement officer to wear a mask, something that covers their face, or a disguise while dealing with the public at work.
But an officer CAN wear a mask or face covering if it:
Meets the national rules to stop sicknesses that pass through the air; or
Is meant to protect against smoke or other dangerous things in the air during a natural disaster emergency.
Natural disaster: an event in nature like a flood or earthquake, that breaks a lot of things or hurts people.
Highly skilled law enforcement officers who are part of a team with special training, called “SWAT,” can wear what they need to to protect their faces from getting hurt while doing their work.
It’s against the law for a law enforcement officer to talk to the public at work without clearly showing their name or badge number on their clothing so people can see it.
Breaking this law is considered a Class C misdemeanor, which means they will get in trouble but won’t go to prison.
These changes start on July 1, 2026
