Abortion-Inducing Drugs

This bill is about adding a new part to the law in South Carolina about medicines that end pregnancy.  

• If this bill passes, it will be illegal to make, sell or give out, have, mail, or move medicine that end pregnancy in South Carolina

  • It will also be against the law for doctors to write prescriptions for medicines that end pregnancies.

    • Prescriptions: a special note that only doctors can write, that allows people to get medicine.

  • There are some exceptions to this, like:

    • Treating medical emergencies

    • Removing an ectopic pregnancy

      • Ectopic pregnancy: when an egg that would become a fetus is in the wrong place, putting the life of the pregnant person in danger

    • Removing a dead fetus

      • Fetus: a big group of cells in a pregnant person’s belly, that will become a baby over the course of a pregnancy.

    • Doing something other than ending a pregnancy by choice

    • This bill can not get a whole hospital in trouble

• If this bill passes, fetuses will be treated like they are living people in South Carolina.

  • This means that if a pregnancy is ended or the fetus is impacted, the person who was pregnant and the people who gave the medicine to end the pregnancy will be in big trouble for “killing” or “hurting” the fetus.

• This bill clarifies that South Carolina law applies to some times where a pregnancy ends in another state if the medicine that ended the pregnancy came from South Carolina or if either parent is in South Carolina.
