Bill:

HB 31

SNAP Benefits

SNAP Benefits

About the bill:

If this bill passes:

  • The Alabama Department of Human Resources will need to ask the U.S. Department of Agriculture Food and Nutrition Service for special permission to take out soda, energy drinks, candy, and prepared desserts from what people can use SNAP benefits to buy.

    • Alabama Department of Human Resources: A government office in Alabama that is in charge of making sure people in  Alabama have what they need.

    • US Department of Agriculture Food and Nutrition Service: a part of that national government that uses 16 nutrition programs to make sure kids and adults that don’t have a lot of money can get healthy and safe foods that support their best health.

    • SNAP Benefits: stands for “Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program” which supports people to afford the food they need.

  • If they get permission, the Department of Human Resources has to block people in Alabama from using their SNAP benefits to buy soda, energy drinks, candy, and prepared desserts.

  • The department would need to ask for permission again every year if they are told “no” first.
