Alabama

Bill:

HB 23

LGBTQ+ in schools

LGBTQ+ in schools

About the bill:

Right now, public schools in Alabama  can only give lessons about gender identity or sexual orientation to pre-k to 5th graders if they are right for their age and follow state rules.

  • Gender Identity: The gender a person feels that they are, which can be the same or different from what a doctor said they are when they were born.

  • Sexual Orientation: The gender(s) a person is attracted to.

  • If this bill passes it will:

    • Stop any lessons and conversation about gender identity or sexual orientation in public schools from pre-k all the way through 12th grade.

    • Stop public preK-12 teachers and people who work at schools from putting up pride flags or symbols in or around the school.

    • Stop teachers and staff from calling a student by pronouns that match how the student feels, rather than how they were born.

      • Pronouns: words that identify a person, like “she/her” “he/him” or “they/them”

    • Change part of Alabama laws to include these changes.
