Bill:

HB 14

Constitutional Amendments Statewide

Constitutional Amendments Statewide

About the bill:

Right now, the Alabama Constitution of 2022 can be changed if the group that makes the state laws turns in a suggested change for people to say “yes” or “no” to.

  • The change starts once the lawmakers accept it,

  • Both state and local laws need to be voted on by this group of lawmakers, and usually start once they vote on it or when the law says so

  • Alabama Constitution of 2022: an updated version of the rules Alabama follows that was originally written in 1901.

  • This bill suggests a change to the Alabama Constitution of 2022 that would give the people the power to suggest laws and changes to the state constitution through a process where they can suggest and vote on laws themselves.

    • If the bill passes, suggestions would have the same limits that the lawmakers have.

    • If the bill passes, lawmakers can also suggest other options that are different from what the people vote on.
