Bill:

HB 59

State Funding for School Counselors

State Funding for School Counselors

About the bill:

  • This bill suggests changing part of the Code of Georgia about school counselors to better make sure students in Georgia are supported.

    • Code of Georgia: These are the rules or laws for the state of Georgia that say what people in Georgia can and cannot do.

    • School Counselors: adults at school who help students with their problems, schoolwork, and future plans. They listen, give advice, and support students in making good choices.

  • Specifically, the goals of this bill are to make sure there's enough money for school counselors, salaries and benefits, the right class size, and what is needed in reporting how school counseling is going

  • This bill, if passed, will lock in money from the state for one school counselor for every 250 full-time students.

  • If passed into law, any conflicting laws will be gotten rid of.

  • The state board will decide what school counselors need to do. Most of their time (at least five out of six parts of their work) must be spent helping students or parents with counseling or advice.

  • If the bill is passed, these changes will start as soon as the Governor says so or if it becomes law without that “yes”.
